No dictator can operate without scapegoats and distractions. While we have lost count of what we were to be distracted from (Epstein, corruption, dementia?), the reality of an unwinnable and unplanned war is upon us. Not even the courtesy of a well-orchestrated propaganda campaign on Weapons of Mass Destruction this time around. I may have more of an inter-generational memory and trauma of war, growing up in Europe with stories of bombs and bunkers, loss, hunger, rape and flight from different perspectives. Maybe the lack of experiencing a war at home makes Americans more casual about starting one, especially in faraway regions. And the damage done by war to returned soldiers is marginalized and kept at bay with a "Thank you for your service." In an attempt to convey the desperation that war creates, I combined the wax doll of a World War I soldier at the Belgian Royal Military Museum with the ruins of Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin, and an archival image of a World War II bunker in which everyone suffocated from the firestorm outside.
