This image depicts a teddy bear, collapsed in an alleyway, heavy into the euphoria of its addiction, while a rat looks on. My inspiration came from my observation of the prevalence of drugs in our society and their easy access. It would have been easy enough to paint a drug addict strung out in an alleyway but we have been conditioned to seeing such images in the news everyday. I utilized the iconic image of childhood innocence, the teddy bear, to show how that innocence can be destroyed by drug addiction, be it alcohol, nicotine, or hard drugs. It was a way for me to depict the ravages of drug addiction, not only on the individual but on our social programs as well. Utilizing a teddy bear gets people to stop, look, and think and consider, perhaps, how they can be a force for helping to create positive social change.
