“How Can You Tell The Difference?” is a satirical, infinitely looping 3D animation depicting the cycle of gun violence and the threatening ambiguity of intent of an armed person. The piece, like the never-ending threat of gun violence, is a seamless, senseless, endless cycle. The title is derived from a popular quote, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” This piece asks the question any logical human should: “How Can You Tell The Difference?”
The animation, models, rigging, texturing, lighting, and rendering were completed in Autodesk Maya and rendered in Maxon Redshift. No generative AI was used in the making of this animation. All digital assets were created by the artist. The piece is UHD (3840 X 2160), 24 FPS. The final video contains 10 loops of the animation for a total of 2:05, which seamlessly loops.
The media of animation was chosen for this piece as a commentary on the term "cartoon violence." In the US, 44,447 people died from gun-related causes in 2024 alone. That far exceeds the number of deaths attributed to anvils falling on people's heads. To insist that guns are making our country safer is so absurd that it's comical. The reality of the data is far more outlandish and unbelievable than any cartoon could ever hope to be.
