"No Kings was inspired by the nationwide No Kings protests and my concern over the growing acceptance of authoritarian rhetoric surrounding Donald Trump and the idea that any leader should be elevated above democratic principles. Built from layers of paint, collage, text, and fragmented imagery, the piece reflects the confusion, anxiety, and division many people feel while trying to make sense of this moment in our history. The oversized eyes represent the responsibility of paying attention and refusing to look away. The fractured mouth speaks to the struggle to be heard above the noise of fear, outrage, and misinformation. The crown in this painting represents a warning, but the people who filled the streets in protest represent something stronger—the enduring belief that power belongs to the people, not to those who would ask them to kneel. Watching people across the country and around the world gather in the spirit of the No Kings movement reminded me that courage is contagious. This work is about the power of ordinary people refusing to surrender their voice, their dignity, or their future.
