“Portrait of Mahmoud Ajjour (US tax dollars at work)" uses the traditional ceramic dinner setting as a structural vehicle to convey a specific statement about the human and environmental cost of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, occupied Palestine. Because our country continues to fund the Israeli war machine, this genocide is supported by American tax dollars
Mahmoud Ajjour is one of thousands of child amputees in Gaza. His portrait fills the dinner plate. The side dishes are filled with bombed out buildings and rubble, referring to the toxic wasteland that is now Gaza. Each piece is framed by a wide flat rim, engraved with the image of barbed wire, symbolizing the Gaza death-camp boundary that surrounds the besieged Palestinian population.
