Families across our planet have made the life-altering decision to relocate, to uproot, to leave the homes they love. They must escape the dangers of floods and the droughts of climate change. They must run from gang violence. They must flee the horrific destruction of war and famine. So many of us more fortunate do not comprehend the challenges they must overcome in order to Seek Safety for themselves and their loved ones. To then arrive in our country and be treated like criminals and without due process is abhorrent. Perhaps worse yet is to be forced into jail or deportation after having established years of a new life in this country. Writing as a privileged US citizen, I believe we are better than this.
