On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico set a record worldwide for being the largest and most devastating spill ever. I created this painting in response to the horror of watching it play out over the 87 days of the spill and seemingly never ending loss of wildlife. I was excited when interest in options for alternative energies grew, along with protection for endangered animals and habitats. I thought we’d never look back, but here we are facing an aggressive “drill baby drill” administration, loss of protections, and disregard for vulnerable wildlife, habitats, and public lands. Sadly “The Ball Toss” is more relevant than it was in 2010, and I wish it wasn’t so. This is the only world we have.
